Taipei International Summer Jazz Academy is the unique program in Asia

from morning to midnight everyday, fruitful lessons and events

· Group Lessons – Rhythm & Grooves, Harmony & Forms, Theory & Analysis
· Instrument & Vocal Lessons – Learn with the faculty by levels
· Workshops – Tailor-made for practical skills and thematic topics
· Ensembles – Bands in various styles and couched by faculty
· Jam Sessions – Faculty & students jam together every night
· Career Advice and Experience Sharing – led by faculty, lecturers and teaching assistants
· Final Gala Concerts – Indoor & outdoor concert to show the training results


What you will learn from TISJA?

In addition to the courses traditionally offered in the summer jazz academy program, this year TISJA will make you “Jazz Steady”! These traditional & modern jazz styles will be taught in ensembles, lectures, workshops, even marching bands and performed in carnival and student concert programs. Further, for the first-timers, more basic courses will be added. The advanced courses include Modern jazz, Latin, African style, Funk, Soul and R&B ensembles & etc. The master workshop is also present during the camp, and faculty will jam with the students together every night!

The regular coursework will feature the following:
 
1. Instrument & Vocal Lessons
Woodwinds (Alto Sax, Tenor Sax, Baritone Sax, Clarinet, Flute), Brass (Trumpet, Trombone, Baritone, Euphonium, Tuba), Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello), Piano, Guitar, Double Bass & Electric Bass, Drums, Latin Percussion, Voice (Male & Female)

2. Ensembles 
a. TIJEPA Big Band Recruitment: This big band is for aspiring Brass, Sax & Rhythm Section players, & will be organized by TIJEPA and coached by noted trombonist/Composer Alan Ferber during the TISJA time, and keep regular rehearsals & performances after TISJA by TIJEPA instructors

b. Project Ensembles: Ensembles with various jazz styles, vocalist with rhythm section, vocal ensemble, black music ensemble, Latin, African and world music ensembles

c. Ensembles in various styles and will perform in the concerts held in Shih-Chien University or in the Jazz Carnivals of Da-An Park

d. Students should follow the rules during the camp and not to be late or absent to the classes, the concert and the performances in the Final Gala Concert and Jazz Carnivals

3. Group lessons
a. Workshops: Introduction of Styles, Stage Interaction, Jazz Masters Tributes (2004: Pianist Bill Evans, 2005: Jazz Saxophone Masters, 2006: Afro-Cuban Music Styles, 2007: Groovy Jazz styles, 2008: Jazz Trombone and Ensemble, 2009: Jazz & Hollywood, 2010: Rosario’s Saxophone Master Class)

b. Theory Lessons: Jazz Harmony, Jazz Rhythm, Jazz Form and Jazz Analysis

c. Master classes: Students learn from not only the faculty of their own instrument but also the faculties of other instruments

d. Improvisation: Students learn to play jazz easily through the improvisation lessons

e. Group Improvisation: Students learn to play with other people during the ensemble lessons

f. Basic Lessons: Designed for students having the ability to play instrument or sing but not familiar with jazz music playing

g. Advanced Lessons: Higher level Students will study the playing techniques of Latin, Funk, Soul, R&B. All the advanced students will study Modern Jazz Styles, Advanced Improvisation Skills, etc.


Schedule:

- The theory-related lessons will be given mainly during 9:00-12:00, the individual lessons and the workshops/master classes will be given mainly during 13:00-16:00 and the ensemble lessons will be given mainly during 13:00-20:00.

- Jam Sessions are during the lunch time and the dinner time everyday

- Master Jam Sessions start at 8:00PM every night

- The later period of the camp are the preparation for concert, performances in the Recital Hall of USC


Students can choose to be housed in the dormitory of Shih-Chien University or commute. All the students are required to participate in all the courses/activities. The new 2015 Lesson Schedule will be published in June.
